Case study

The tracking page three million people open every month, at a seventh of the weight.

JavaScript shippedfrom 640 kBto 92 kB

Client
Parcelway

Frontend developer
Kind
Web
A dark city map with thin gold route lines

The problem

Most people open a tracking link once, on a phone, on the move. Parcelway was sending them a full single page app.

The approach

  • The status and the map are in the first response; the app shell is gone.
  • The page works offline after the first visit and updates itself when the parcel moves.
  • One image, sized for the screen that asked for it.

The result

JavaScript went from 640 kB to 92 kB. The page is usable in under a second on a 3G connection.
